PAI’s 131st Annual Exhibition will run from 7th September to 20th October 2019, in The Piazza, Paisley.
Paisley Art Institute (PAI) is breaking new ground this year for its 131stAnnual Exhibition. In a bold move it has secured a temporary venue for this year’s exhibition in central Paisley in a vacant supermarket located in The Piazza shopping centre. Due to the closure and major refurbishment of Paisley Museum & Art Galleries, the PAI will be out of place for at least three more years till 2022.
This bare 3,000sqft. floor space will allow PAI to stage its annual exhibition with some flair as well as open up exciting opportunities for artists to display work in a non-traditional venue which PAI hope will attract artists who are new to the organisation (founded 1876) to submit work to Scotland’s longest running annual open exhibition with the opportunity of showing work alongside many of PAI’s 250 strong Artist Members.
PAI is also delighted that leading UK artist, John Walter, will appear as Guest Artist, bring his Virtual Reality project, The Fourth Wall, to Paisley. Commissioned by the Look Again Festival, this new VR work creates imaginary landscapes where John invites viewers to enter a virtual playground of symbology surrounded by immersive sound, music, text and highly colourful imagery. The artist describes himself as a maximalist and his work is both esoteric and profound in his use of everyday objects, symbols and motifs that are highly recognisable. He has a particular fascination with pattern, none more so than the world famous Paisley Pattern which is referenced in this new work.
The exhibition will run from 7thSeptember to 20thOctober 2019. The venue is adjacent Paisley Gilmour Street Station, with level access throughout.
